Police say a suspicious vehicle observed at a Dawson Springs convenience store led to the arrest of a Madisonville man for trafficking meth Thursday.

The Madisonville/Hopkins County Vice/Narcotics Unit was conducting surveillance due to drug trafficking complaints in Dawson Springs when they reportedly noticed the suspicious vehicle with an expired registration plate at Casey’s General Store on East Arcadia Avenue. Detectives tried to make a traffic stop on KY 109 at the intersection of Rosedale Lane. As the vehicle began to slow down, police say the passenger door opened and the passenger jumped out and fled on foot. Detectives recognized the man as 45-year old James Alfred, who had an active warrant for a trafficking methamphetamine case in Hopkins County Circuit Court.

Detectives report Alfred ignored commands to stop, and he was taken to the ground where he continued to resist arrest. While he was being taken into custody, detectives say Alfred began to reach toward his waistband where they found a concealed hatchet. When he was taken to the ground, police reportedly observed a plastic box fly out of Alfred’s hand which contained about a quarter ounce of suspected crystal meth.

Alfred was lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center charged with 1st Degree Trafficking in a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine Over 2 Grams), 2nd Degree Fleeing or Evading Police on Foot, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Resisting Arrest, and Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon.
