Authorities say a medical issue suffered by a Cadiz man may have caused a two vehicle collision on Rockcastle Road in Trigg County Tuesday morning. Trigg County Sheriff’s  Lieutenant Rick Johnson tells the News Edge the wreck occurred between 7:45am and 8:00am in the 1500 block of Rockcastle Road.

Lt. Johnson says Donald Mathis was driving a Ford pickup truck toward Hamtown when a witness observed his vehicle going back and forth in his lane and then cross the center line. The witness stated Mathis avoided hitting one vehicle, but then collided with a smaller pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction driven by William Dunning of Cadiz.

Dunning and his wife were uninjured in the collision. Mathis was treated at the scene and then transported by ambulance to Trigg County Hospital. After conducting a follow-up, Lt. Johnson says he learned Mathis suffered a seizure while at the hospital. Based on that information and an evaluation conducted by EMS personnel, he believes Mathis may have suffered a seizure while driving and then collided with Dunning’s truck.

According to Lt. Johnson, Mathis was flown from Trigg County Hospital to Baptist Health in Paducah where his condition is unknown at this time.

Lt. Johnson indicates both vehicles were towed from the accident scene.
