The state House Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection Committee this week passed a resolution, sponsored by Ninth District State Representative Myron Dossett, that would urge the United States Congress to help caregivers of veterans across all eras. The resolution specifically asks Congress to pass the Military and Veteran Caregiver Services Improvement Act of 2017.
Currently, veterans injured on or after September 11, 2001 are eligible to receive caregiver services through the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010. The act gives caregivers of veterans the tools they need to properly take care of veterans, such as caregiver education, respite care, and mental health services.
According to a release, the Military and Veteran Caregiver Services Improvement Act of 2017 would expand that eligibility to caregivers of veterans injured before September 11, 2001, thus improving services for all veteran caregivers from all eras.
Dossett was accompanied by Robert Kaminski, who has lived in Christian County for 18 years, who has a wealth of military service. He served 14 years in the Army and National Guard and 10 years in the infantry and four years in military intelligence. Kaminski said this resolution was very important to him because it treats all veterans fairly.
The resolution now goes to the full House for consideration.
