Trigg County High School has called a news conference for 4pm Thursday at the school where it is expected to name Hopkinsville assistant coach Payton Croft the new boys basketball coach.
Croft is a 2005 graduate of Crittenden County High School where he was an all-district basketball player under his father and coach Jimmy Croft. Payton served as an assistant coach under his father at Livingston Central and has been on Tim Haworth's staff at Hopkinsville the past several seasons which included back to back trips to the Sweet 16.
The hiring of Croft is considered a surprise by some. Trigg County assistant coach Rex Booth, who guided Livingston Central to the 2012 district title, was considered the front runner for the job after serving as an assistant coach under Mike Wright, who recommended him to be his replacement. Wright announced before the 2012-13 season that it would be his last as head coach.
Croft inherits two starters and a talented sophomore class that finished 20-9 and won a district title.
